Candlelit Winter Wedding in the Adirondacks

Luxury Candlelit Winter Wedding in Lake Placid, Adirondacks. Bride wore Prada and Paco Rabanne, images by Mary Dougherty

Our bride for this wedding calls Lake Placid home. When planning a candlelit Adirondack winter wedding for their closest family and friends, Natalia and Nick prioritized guest experience. In fact, they eloped a month earlier in the Dolomites, so there was no ceremony. The weekend centered around inviting everyone to experience a winter wonderland in New York. The February weather did not disappoint.

Few venues can host a luxury Lake Placid winter wedding. As an Adirondack based wedding photographer, I know the options well. Never have I seen a celebration quite like this.

The Whiteface Lodge has a unique wedding set up, with a large fire place at the center of the room. I have never experienced a more cozy atmosphere that this room filled with candles. The table design was single stem white roses with candles at varying heights. It was impossibly chic… and warm.

Hockey, Skiing and Après Ski in Lake Placid

The wedding weekend started on Thursday, as guests were invited to come early and enjoy skiing at Whiteface. I met up with the couple for a skiing photo session and loved shooting on film. It perfectly told their story and allowed us to document the trails Natalia grew up on. Whiteface Mountain is located in Wilimington, NY and just 20 minutes (13miles) from of Lake Placid.

On Friday, guests gathered at Smoke Signals, a local restaurant for the welcome party. Known for their bbq, guests wore mountain chic attire and enjoyed catching up over dinner and drinks.

The wedding day started with an optional pick up hockey game at Whiteface Lodge. We love the convenience of having a rink on property. Lots of family and friends joined in to play during single digits before getting dressed up for the evening. My favorite thing about weekend events is the way I get to know the couple and the people they care about. It allows us to capture images that are even more meaningful.

Natalia set the bar high when it comes to curating wedding looks. She chose well, pairing a Toteme cape scarf with a tailored Paco Rabanne lace dress. At the end of the night, she changed into a pink Prada mini dress with a back bow detail, and silver Prada slingbacks.

Luxury Lake Placid Winter Wedding Reception

The order of events for the day did not follow a traditional schedule. Once our couple was ready, we met for a first look. Next we had friends gather for a few photos. Finally, we captured family photos before the start of cocktail hour. Dinner and speeches followed cocktail hour, and the night ended with dancing. It was the best party and most memorable evening.

Here are a few more images from our time together, shot on both film and digital cameras.

A classic Cape Cod wedding never goes out of style, especially at the Kittansett Club.

A Chautauqua wedding is stunning no matter the size. Karen and Walker pivoted to host the most amazing micro wedding at this historic American retreat.
