It’s a familiar scene. At the start of a session my subject hesitates as I prepare to take the first shot and admits some insecurity with being in front of the camera. I can sense the doubt in their mind as they think they could be the one person I’m not able to photograph well. They don’t trust themselves.

They think, “I know Mary is a good photographer, but I could be the one person she’s shot that just doesn’t take good photos.”

Over half of what I do is interact with people. That is why at the beginning of each session I begin building trust with my subjects. I reassure them not only that there is nothing to worry about, but they are in the same boat as everyone else. If they are able to forget about their own insecurities and trust me not only will they have good photos but they will have fun.

Since photography is so incredibly accessible, everyone has experience being in front of a camera. In that same vein, everyone has some really bad pictures of themselves. Anyone can take a picture, but the results can be so varied.

If you look through the photos I take you can sense the interactions I have with people. I want to photograph people in a way that first of all makes them feel comfortable and confident. That takes trust on the part of the couple, not only in my ability, but trust to let me in to the personal moments of their lives. Secondly I want to show their personality and love for each other. I want the images to be as unique as the people in them, and I love to collaborate to come up with a unique way document their relationship.

Now that I’ve been photographing people for several years, I know that one of the main things that differentiates me as a photographer is how I interact with people… and when those people trust me, that’s when the best photos happen.
