Sometimes it slips by, and suddenly the leaves are changing are you are wearing sweaters and wondering how it all happened. Other times it ends abruptly, and there is a distinct change of pace and activity. This year it was the latter that marked the end of summer, with the start of preseason. For those of you that don’t know, my husband is a cross country and track coach, and I moonlight as an assistant coach on afternoons and the occasional free weekend. While the temperatures have yet to officially change and there are still sunny days in our future (I hope) the start of the season and soon the school year has arrived. It means a busy campus, daily practices, and a lot more running.

I don’t know if you can ever be ready for the end of summer – at least living in New York – but looking back I’m content with all I’ve done. I spent those sunny months photographing gorgeous weddings, picking endless amounts of berries, visiting with family and friends, and enjoying some uninterrupted time at home cooking and relaxing with Matt. It will leave me with strong enough memories to get me through the winter and remind me what I have to look forward to. On Sunday, as a last hurrah Matt and I canned peaches and I made several peach ricotta tarts. The sweet summer fruit was juicy and delicious and I can’t wait to open a can this winter, the perfect reminder of what summer tastes like.

Of course, for those of you with a few more days or weeks of summer – hang on to them. I’m not trying to rush you so go back out to that porch, deck or pool and enjoy it. Then one day when you start thinking of layering and realize you are no longer wearing shorts, you can blissfully look back on those summer days and wonder when it all changed.
