Meet Jake: applied design + visual communication major in the new BFA program Houghton College, music lover, and aspiring photographer to name a few. I’m excited to have him on as an intern this fall and show him the ropes of small business ownership and wedding photography. Of course, he’s quickly finding out that what I do is at best 5% glamorous, 100% hard work, and 75% sitting at a computer… but so far he’s staying.

Last week was his first day and we took our cameras out into the backyard for dual shoot where he captured some embarrassing photos of me, I talked about making people feel comfortable in front of the camera, and ended up with some portraits of him. (Check out a few more shots I took of him here). It was just a little test to see him in action, but don’t worry I’m not taking it easy on him. I’m throwing him in the deep end and he’ll be joining me this weekend to document Lauren + Scott’s wedding. Honestly though, I love being able to give people the experience of what I do, so they are able refine their own style and skill.

When Jake first contacted me last spring about a possible internship, he admitted to “not really knowing what a blog was” and basically being completely out of the social media loop. On Monday I was officially his first twitter follower (he’s currently up to 15!) and he tweeted his first tweet. It’s one of my goals to get him more actively involved in social media, as an extension of this internship. If you like you can send him some encouragement on twitter and keep up on his progress here. Look back for a few posts from him on this blog every so often, and once again welcome, Jake!

if you are interested in interning in the future feel free to send me an email: hello @ marydougherty.net I currently am only accepting interns from Houghton College as I’m located really close by and have an established relationship with their art department.
