This past fall Jake spent some time interning with me. I began to show him the ropes and he dove in (not chlorinated because he is allergic, of course, one of the many things I learned about him). As he tested the waters of wedding photography he continued to rise to the occasion as a second shooter. He found second shooting enjoyable and I found him capable. This coming year he will be accompanying me as a second shooter to many weddings. I’ll be taking more awkward pictures like the one above to test the light in new locations… so get that model face ready Jake because we both know the older ladies love you. (seriously, they do).

Part II of this post is brought to you by Jake, and here’s what he has to say about second shooting:

When someone asks me why I like second shooting, it’s always a pretty simple answer. It’s fun! Then comes the dreaded “why is it fun?” question. My response goes something like this, “Well… 1. I’m doing what I love to do. 2. I get to travel around the area. and 3. Just about every night ends in a dance party.” Apart from just being fun, the most important aspect of second shooting is chemistry. Let’s say wedding photography is like hot chocolate. In good hot chocolate there’s a touch of cayenne pepper to spice things up a little. I see myself being the pinch of cayenne that helps to bring out the best of the chocolate. Hot chocolate without cayenne is still hot chocolate, but when added (in the right ratio), it takes the photography to another level.

If you know me, you know I love hot chocolate. Well played Jake. I’m not a huge fan of spicy hot cocoa, but I do like having you second shoot with me. Looking forward to this year!
