It’s so hard to find the “right” time to have pictures taken. There is always a lot going on, many things to accomplish and if you have a moment free you probably want to spend it doing something fun and not worrying about the fact that your kids will not sit still next to each other. So, you spend years before having any family pictures made… at least that’s what most of us do. This weekend I photographed a few couples who commented that they hadn’t done this since their wedding.

Photographing families is an art, one that I love practicing and refining. I’m a believer in making the experience as fun as possible for everyone. That means consistently trying new things to get the right shot, like with this image above. After taking a picture with everyone sitting and looking at the camera, I told the kids to run around mom and dad until I said stop – then they would be caught in their parent’s arms. Doing something to add movement and natural laughter is always a good way to go in my opinion… and sometimes the outtakes or setup for the shot become just as interesting as well. Allowing kids the freedom to be themselves in between sitting and being still is the best way to keep photos from becoming a chore no one wants to do. So, despite the energy and action that can take place in a family session, I love surprising people with the finished product and full set of images… which you will see more of in a few weeks so I don’t spoil any holiday cards!
